Dr. Gabriel V. Diamantis is an experienced ESP lecturer at the Department of International and European Studies, University of Piraeus. He currently teaches English and IR terminology.

The discipline of International Relations (IR) is the academic study of the origins and consequences -both empirical and normative- of a world divided among states. So defined, IR is a very broad discipline which includes a variety of sub-fields such as foreign policy analysis, diplomatic statecraft, comparative politics, international political economy, strategic studies and military affairs, ethics, and international political theory. In addition to its wide scope, the study of international relations is shaped by the interplay between continuity and change in its subject-matter.
It is commonly known that political argument often boils down to a struggle over the legitimate meaning of terms. The problem is that words such as "democracy", "freedom" and "justice" have different meanings to different people. Controversy runs so deep that no neutral or settled definition can ever be developed.
At the same time public policy concerns frequently make such technical terms as "charismatic" vitally important, and ignorance of their meaning hinders communication or opinon formation.
Similarly the language of "rights" is even more important than it was twenty years ago, when even the United Kingdom had no Human Rights Act, and its court structure was much less amenable to "judicial review".
Politics as an art -an indefinable art-, and political science as a discipline, are overwhelmingly about words, shades of meaning and ideological linkages neither grammatically nor logically determined.
It is also known that the language used by students of politics is largely the same as that used by practitioners of politics, and particularly by professional politicians. As the latter are primarily interested in political advocacy rather than political understanding, they have a strong incentive to use language to manipulate and sometimes confuse. This, in turn, forces students of politics to be especially careful in their own use of language. They must define terms clearly and refine concepts with precision in order to safeguard them from the misinterpretations often current in everyday political debate.
English for International Politics, Law and Finance focuses on both terminology and discussion of politics and law matters and finance i.e. topics which provoke meaningful debate. It aims to cover the concepts, people and institutions most commonly refer to in academic and scholarly writing about politics and law.
Each unit includes reading tasks, vocabulary tasks, speaking activities and writing tasks all of which illustrate political, legal and financial terminology guaranteed to engage the students' interest and enthusiasm.
The reading task aims to check the student's comprehension of the text through skimming and scanning techniques. In the vocabulary tasks students are asked to define key terms and expressions having been given some key words. For variation they are asked to pick up three to five words from the text which they use in order to define certain terms.
It is in the reading and comprehension sections, that the most typical usages of politics, law and finance terminology will be found, although some of the more specialised constructions have been rephrased in the interests of linguistic practicability.
The translation tasks include phrases and expressions uded mainly in everyday language of politics, law and finance.
Sayings by politicians or proverbs are cited under the title of each of the units which can always motivate discussion as a warm up.
It is an extensive course which brings the real world of politics, law and finance into the classroom.
Last but not least the material in the Appendices will help students to develop and express their own opinions both in writing and speaking.
The topics in Appendix 4, have been chosen to give controversial and challenging viewpoints on global issues some of them vital. Using the hints in Appendices 1 to 4 students can develop and express their own opinions on these topics, guaranteed to engage their interest and enthusiasm.
The book also provides the students with a guide to Internet resources- useful web sites and a Glossary of technical terms that are indispensable research tools in the study of international relations.
